Geocache Description:

Located on the museum property. The terrain is fairly flat and should cause no problems for stollers, wheelchairs, etc.

On March 25 1634, Father Andrew White held a mass of Thanksgiving for the first settlers of Maryland. They did not stay at St. Clement’s Island but traveled on the St. Mary’s City due to St. Mary’s City’s better location. Within site of the island is a museum dedicated to these brave first settlers and early Maryland history. Most days during the summer you can take a boat ride over to visit the island but there is only a cross to mark this historic occasion and the island has eroded away to only a portion of what it was.

Next to the museum is a little red schoolhouse that was built in 1820. It served the Charlotte Hall community. In the mid 20th century this schoolhouse was going to be torn down but was saved by Maryland Senator Bernie Fowler. He moved it onto his property where he shared it with visitors. Later, it was moved again to where it is presently located at the St Clement’s museum.

You can tour the museum and school for a small fee. Adult tickets are $3.00 and children less. There are picnic tables located on the site. Parking is across the street from the museum. While you can look for this cache after the museum is closed, I would suggest taking the time and come during the day while it is open. If nothing else, the views are fantastic.
